If losing weight seems to be more difficult than it used to, you might want to blame your metabolism.

You might want to, but should you?

Your eating habits can affect your metabolism so that you don’t burn as many calories; there’s no doubt about that. But did you actually cause irreparable damage, dooming you to a life of excess weight gain every time you even breathe near a cookie?

I’ll answer that question by starting with my personal experience...

Not every enjoyable food has to be completely avoided when you’re trying to eat healthy or lose weight.

Oh heck, what am I saying? There aren’t ANY enjoyable foods that ever have to be completely avoided!

Still, there are ways to turn an infrequent indulgence into a better choice that can be enjoyed more often.

For instance, I tend to shy away from pre-made burgers in the store. Even though the convenience is incredibly tempting as a busy mom, there...

You don’t have to ditch your favorite recipes if you’re trying to eat healthy.

Of course, as long as you stick with your good habits a majority of the time, there’s nothing wrong with the occasional meal that doesn’t fit your normal standards of healthy eating.

However, you may find there’s a way to “healthify” a favorite recipe without sacrificing its yum-factor. That’s what I did for this…

Spinach & Artichoke, Chicken & Pasta Casserole

Protein recommendations are all over the map. Is it the most annoying thing in life?

Well, maybe.

It’s a toss up between that and the “close door” button that doesn’t actually do anything on elevators. Between those two things, it’s enough to drive a person crazy.

I can help you out with one of them (hint: I’m not an elevator mechanic).

Successful Weight Loss

Part of the reason protein information varies so much is because advice changes depending on...

I don’t like feeling stuck in the kitchen all day. That’s why I try to come up with recipes like these where I can spend less time cooking, but get multiple meals out of it in return.

Of course, I want to do it in a way that won’t compromise my diet, too…

Zero Guilt

Incorporating more protein into your diet is one of the big picture things you can do to manage body composition — whether it be losing fat, or just to prevent gaining it.

My top 3 tips f...

There’s a rumor among dieters that eating before bed causes weight gain.

Even nutrition coaches’ opinions vary on this.

I’ll give you my take on what the research has to say. Then I’ll dive into the more important aspect, dealing with why you feel the need to eat at night in the first place.

The Great Debate

There are two sides to every argument.

For instance, Seth and I have a disagreement on the laundry. He thinks certain clothes that have been worn...

Are eggs good or bad? Should you eat low-carb or low-fat (we actually answer that one here)? Should you skip breakfast or is it the most important meal?

Don’t like the current answer, give it a week and it’ll change.

At least that’s what it feels like.

But does the science behind legitimate nutrition advice actually change as much as it seems? I can confidently inform you that the answer to that question is a very solid:

Yes. And no. But also yes. An...

I accidentally made something my kids love. (And I like it too.)

I was experimenting with a recipe to add protein to trail mix, for a healthy trail mix workshop and nutrition chat I’m doing for a local group.

This recipe transpired.

It ended up not being right for the trail mix, but it made awesome, healthy snacks for the kids. I let them taste my first attempt and they ate the entire batch! So I made more, just to have some for later, and they prom...

I have some good news, some bad news, and then some more good news about this recipe.

I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago, and I went ahead and calculated the calories. (For the record, counting calories isn’t something I do all the time. In fact, it’s not something I do most of the time. You can see all the pros and cons of calorie counting here.)

The number I came up with was surprisingly low.

That works great for me and MY current goals...

Taco Tuesday is a real thing at our house.

I’d be happy with a Taco Wednesday, Taco Thursday, Friday, Saturday… you get the picture.

I never get tired of it. So, naturally, I found a way to make a lean meat into a tender, from scratch filling for every Mexican dish possible.

Now I can have it as often as I want, even when I’m trying to be a little more strict with my meals.

Give it a try and let me know what you think!
